There is now a new way of taking HIV medicines in the form of two injections called long-acting injectables, which must be given every 8 weeks in the clinic.
LATA is an open-label, randomised clinical trial taking place in Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa. It will recruit 460 HIV-positive adolescents, aged 12-19, to find out whether taking long-acting injectable medicines every 8 weeks is as effective and safe as taking tablet HIV medicine every day. It will also assess the quality of life benefits of long-acting injectables for adolescents living with HIV.
